As a coach to young athletes, it is important to teach the kids what mindset they need. This will help with overall confidence and happiness, and it helps keep the love for the game close to heart. This is exactly what I am going to talk about in today’s blog.Â

"I always make the same mistakes, I suck"..then the head goes down and the shoulders sink into the neck. Demeanour is shot, and confidence is almost gone; sound familiar or should I say does this look familiar? As a coach I see this all the time, on the first few tries, if the actions, skill or results are not perfect, the athlete internalizes the outcome as mistakes. They see themselves and their worth through these actions, but that is not the correct mindset to have. In basketball, the mindset is " habits".Â
What is the habit I want to grow here? When we think about growth and habits, we know it takes a while, consistency and persistence. We understand it's not a "one and done" deal, but constant growth.
In the world of basketball mindset is a crucial part of the game and training. Learning how to take mistakes and shift them into a learning opportunity, rather than a setback is a key mindset to instill in our young athletes.
Remember:Â roses don't bloom on the first planting day!Â
Shift your mindset and watch how much stronger you grow! The roots need to sink deep, we need the fundamentals. Then the skills start to sprout and before you know it, the athlete's skills are shining bright.
